History  
  USS Gwin (Lt. Cdr. John Benjamin Fellows, Jr. with Cdr John Martin Higgins ComDesDiv 23 embarked) was damaged beyond repair by Japanese warships during the Battle of Kolombangara July 13 1943.
Scuttled by torpedoes from USS Ralph Talbot (DD 390) in position 07º41'S, 157º27'E.
61 of her crew were killed and 15 wounded. Amongst the 214 survivors were the Commanding officer and Commander Higgins who were rescued by the Ralph Talbot.
