Sunk after being hit by 3 Japanese kamikaze planes south-west of Ormoc Bay, Philippines in position 10º50'N, 124º30'E. The ship was abandoned and the survivors were picked up by nearby vessels. An hour later USS Walke sank Mahan by gunfire and torpedoes. 6 of her crew were lost. Destroyed by Japanese aircraft in the Leyte Gulf, scuttled by Walke. |
