History | USS Meredith (Cmdr Harry Enson Hubbard) was lost near San Cristobal Island in the Solomons. Sunk by air attack while escorting the USS Vireo and petrol barges, alerted to the oncoming attack had taken on the crew from the Vireo which was abandoned and left adrift. The Japanese dive bombers appeared from the carrier Shokaku concentrated their attack on the Meredith sinking her with many hits and then strafed the survivors. 185 were killed and 78 survived from the Meredith, and 55 were killed and 15 survived from the vireo. The commanding officer of the Meredith died of wounds and the Commanding officer of the Vireo Lt James Claude Legg survived though wounded as was every one else. The survivors were rescued by the USS Grayson, Gwin and Seminole and also PBY VP-51. |
